The 2025 Expert Consultation Meeting on High-Quality Development of the Statistics Discipline was held at the Changning Campus of SUIBE on the afternoon of November 1. Chairman of the National Statistics Teaching Steering Committee and professor from Peking University Fang Xiangzhong, SUIBE president Wang Rongming, and the leadership and faculty representatives of the School of Statistics and Data Science attended the meeting.

In his remarks, Wang Rongming pointed out that SUIBE attaches great importance to the statistics discipline, taking it as key area of development. Currently, the university is deploying innovation and education chains in accordance with the industrial layout, which in turn pushes the reform and innovation of higher education talent cultivation models. The statistics discipline is at a critical stage of enhancing its depth and developing distinctive strengths. Wang Rongming expressed the hope that the experts would help “take the pulse and make a diagnosis” of the discipline’s development by offering more valuable advice, thereby supporting the university in achieving high-quality development.

Zhang Riquan, Dean of the School of Statistics and Data Science of SUIBE, briefed the experts attending the meeting on the development of the school with a focus on its talent cultivation system, development of disciplines, faculty, teaching and research achievements. He also analyzed the challenges and bottlenecks faced by the discipline of statistics. He expressed the expectation that the experts would provide strategic guidance to help break new ground in the development of the college’s disciplines.

In his speech, Fang Xiangzhong hopes that the faculty and students of the statistics major could be down-to-earth, develop a global vision, serve the country and make contributions to it. He also hopes that SUIBE would further enhance its publicity efforts and expand the influence of its statistics discipline across the country.

During an exchange session, the attending experts from the National Statistics Teaching Steering Committee and scholars in statistics highly praised the rapid development of SUIBE’s statistics discipline in recent years. They fully affirmed the achievements made in faculty development, talent cultivation, and scientific research, noting that the discipline is built on a solid foundation, supported by a strong and well-structured talent pipeline, has delivered notable results, and holds great promise for the future. The experts had a heated discussion and put forward targeted suggestions based on the development pattern of the national statistics discipline and teaching requirements.
