Established in October 2017, the School of Trade Negotiations at Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE) is China’s first specialized institution for training trade negotiators. Its predecessor, the School of WTO Research and Education established in May 2002, was one of the earliest academic institutions in China for WTO research and education. In November 2009, one of our professors, on behalf of China, was awarded the “WTO Chairs Programme (WCP)” initiated by the WTO Secretariat and became one of the first WTOChairholdersafter fierce competition with other 70-plus WTO members.

All of our full-time faculty members hold their doctoral degrees, and most of them have overseas study experience, including one doctoral supervisor. The School offers bachelor's programs in“Economics (International Economic Organization Orientation)” and “International Economic and Trade Rules”, master's programs in“the Law and the Policy of the World Trade Organization”, “International Business (Orientation of International Economic Organization)”, and “Juris Master (OrientationofForeign-related Law and Global Economic Governance), and one doctoral program of Applied Economics (Orientation of Global Economic and Trade Governance).

Adhering to the concept of internationally-oriented education, the School, in addition to the cooperation with the WTO, is a member of UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) Virtual Institute and a member of the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade in the United Nations Economic and Social Council for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP/ARTnet). And many of our students have been selected to do their internships or receive training in international organizations and related central government agencies.

The School has been insisting on the pursuit of academic excellence and has established multiple top research institutions, such as Shanghai Center for Global Trade and Economic Governance (SC-GTEG), World Trade Organization Research Center (a member of International and Regional Studies Research Centers registered in the Ministry of Education), the Innovative Practice Base for the Cultivation of High-level International Talentunderthe Ministry of Education, and SUIBE Institute under the Network on International Trade and Investment System (NITIS).

As the host institute of WTO Chair in China, the School has developed itself to be a core participant in the global academic network of the WTO Secretariat, having gradually become an internationally renowned academic institution on WTO-related topics.
