The School of Statistics and Information, formerly known as the School of Business Information, was founded in 2008 and adopted its current name in 2016. As the only school of science and technology in SUIBE, it currently has five departments: the Department of Mathematical Statistics, the Department of Economic Statistics, the Department of Information Management, the Department of Data Science, and the Department of Applied Mathematics, and research institutions including the Research Center for Business Big Data and the Research Center for Financial Big Data and Actuarial.
Adhering to the concept of “promoting research in economics and trade based on science and technology”, the school has formed an integrated talent training system covering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students to cultivate inter-disciplinary talents in “big data, AI + economic management” for the new era who should not only care about their family and country but also have concerns for humanity.
The School has a doctoral program in the second tier academic discipline of Quantitative Economics under the top tier academic discipline of Applied Economics, a master’s program in the top tier academic discipline of Statistics (science), a professional master’s program in Applied Statistics, and master’s program in the second tier academic discipline of Quantitative Economics, Statistics (economics), and Business Information Management respectively.
There are five undergraduate programs: Applied Statistics, Economic Statistics, Information Management, and Information System, Data Science and Big Data Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. The subject of Statistics, the leading discipline of the School, has been ranked in the top 30% of the “Best Chinese Subjects Ranking” by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy for many consecutive years. In addition, the subject of Applied Statistics, selected as a candidate sponsored to be a nationally top-rated program in the first batch, ranked 9th in the above-mentioned ranking in 2021.
There are more than 80 faculty and staff members, including 71 full-time teachers, over 65% of whom hold senior titles, over 90% have doctoral degrees, and more than 73% are under 45 years old. There is a faculty member granted the special government allowance from the State Council, a member of the seventh and eighth Discipline Appraisal Group of Statistics under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member and a vice chairman of the Steering Committee of Statistics for Colleges and Universities under the Ministry of Education, and over 10 high-level experts at national and provincial levels. In the past five years, the school has made a series of breakthroughs in scientific research.
Professor Rongming Wang, the academic leader of Statistics, as the chief expert, presided over and completed the major project of the National Social Science Foundation: “Actuarial Statistical Modeling and Risk Regulation of Health Insurance in the Context of Big Data”.Our faculty members have undertaken 22 primary and general national projects, including those granted by the National Social Science Foundation and National Natural Science Foundation, and published over 200 high-level papers in major academic journals at home and abroad, like JRSSB, JBES, IME, SCIENCE CHINA, and Statistical Research.
The School has made active contributions to the construction of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, the Shanghai Expo, and the “Five Centers” by taking academic advantage and participating in the construction of a strong trade nation and regional development.
The school has cooperated with the General Administration of Customs and the Songjiang District Government to build respectively the Global Trade Monitoring and Analysis Center (Shanghai) and the G60 Science and Technology Innovation Corridor. Meanwhile, the School has formed a trade index research team to develop the trade indexes for countries of the Belt and Road Initiative, which has released a series of indexes, including the Trade Index of Guest Countries of Honor for the China International Import Expo.
The school is committed to reforming and innovating its talent training model and has yielded fruitful results in education. “Business Statistics (English)” was selected for the National Online Courses in the first batch, and “Social Practice of Trade Statistics” was selected as the First-class Course in Shanghai. Textbooks authored by our faculty members, like “Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics”, won the Shanghai Excellent Textbook Award.
More than ten faculty members have won significant awards in teaching competitions in Shanghai, and have been awarded the Shanghai Excellent Teaching Achievements many times. The school, having implemented the undergraduate excellence enhancement plan and opened the experimental class of trade statistics innovation in 2019, aims to cultivate interdisciplinary and high-quality talent with a solid foundation in economics and statistics.
We attach great importance to cultivating students’ scientific research, innovation, and practical competence. We have cooperated for many consecutive years with the Statistical Society for Foreign Economic Relations and Trade of China under the Ministry of Commerce to carry out the social survey project “Visiting Ten Thousand Enterprises, Read China”, organizing our teachers and students to visit and investigate foreign trade enterprises all over China, to guide our students in the fieldwork.
Many students have won special, first, and second prizes in the National Mathematical Competition for University Students, the National Mathematical Modeling Competition for University Students, and the American Mathematical Contest in Modeling for University Students. In addition, They have also won awards at the municipal level or above in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions such as the “Internet +” and the “Challenge Cup”.
As of April 2022, the School has nearly 1,100 students, including 600 undergraduates and 400 postgraduates. We have made remarkable achievements in talent cultivation, with graduates of high employment rate, quality, salary, and job satisfaction. Our graduates have mainly entered the financial industry, information consulting industry, internet companies, and government departments. They have been popular with internet companies such as Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, and Bilibili.
SUIBE ranks the 13th in the “2021 Income Ranking for University and College Graduates in China”, and the 3rd among universities of finance and economics, in which graduates from the School of Statistics and Information are among the top. In the past five years, an increasing number of graduates have gone to Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Yale University, Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, and other well-known universities at home and abroad to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees.
