The School of Law of SUIBE, one of the first law schools established in Shanghai, boasts a long history and a deep tradition of foreign-related legal education. It is founded in 1984 by Professor Qiu Shaoheng, a former Deputy Director of the Legislative Affairs Commission (LAC) under the NPC Standing Committee (NPCSC) and a renowned jurist in China, and is one of the first departments/schools of international economic law in China approved by the Ministry of Education. The year 1985 witnessed the beginning of enrolling postgraduates in international economic law, making it one of the first law departments for postgraduate education in Shanghai and the first base (East China Foreign-related Lawyers Training Centre) to undertake training for lawyers, especially those handling foreign-related matters in China. In 1995, the School of Law was established, and the first dean was Professor Zhou Hanmin, a Member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Shanghai Municipal Committee, and former Vice President of the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade.
The School of Law has been focusing on curriculum development and has made the following achievements. Two courses have been recognized as first-class undergraduate courses in Shanghai higher education institutions in the first batch, three courses as key courses in Shanghai, six courses as “Municipal Excellence Courses in Shanghai Universities”, five courses as “Model English Courses in Shanghai Universities, five courses as “Model English Courses in Shanghai Universities”, the course of international business law as “Model English Courses for International Students in Shanghai Universities”, and ten courses including “Global Governance” as “Key Courses in Shanghai Universities”. In recent years, the School has insisted on the goal of “internationalization + practicality” in cultivating talent, and students have won many awards in various law competitions at home and abroad.
The School has been laying stress on “Sino-foreign Joint Training” and has integrated foreign original textbooks, the construction of overseas student internship bases, and other educational and teaching methods into an international talent training model. The School actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation and has established cooperative relationships with world-renowned universities such as the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, Washington University in St. Louis, St. John’s University, and the University of San Francisco in the United States, Goethe University in Frankfurt of Germany, and the University of Warsaw in Poland, in programs including successive graduate and postgraduate study, student exchanges, students study tours and teacher exchanges. In addition, it has also set up overseas practice bases for students in Shearman & Sterling in Paris and Zhonglun W&D Law Firm in Europe.
