Introduction to the Department of Financial Engineering
Focusing on China’s financial development and the development of Shanghai as an international financial center, the Department of Financial Engineering, with its global, professional, and forward-looking outlook, is devoted to training professionals in line with the occupational requirements of CFA and Chinese securities practitioners. The Department cultivates interdisciplinary and practical talent familiar with domestic and international financial regulations and analytical skills, modern financial engineering theories and practices, and proficient in the design and application of financial products and tools for the Chinese and foreign investment banks, commercial banks, fund management companies and multinational companies’ regional headquarters. The Financial Engineering program was accredited by the CFA Institute in 2019 and has successfully joined the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program.
Academic Research
We give high priority to academic research, take teaching research and academic research as leverage and a starting point for our development, and have conducted extensive research around program development planning and implementation plan, innovation of teaching content, and training mode. The Department has undertaken more than ten projects at the provincial and ministerial levels, including projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, won scientific research awards at the national, provincial, and ministerial levels, and published dozens of academic papers. We also assisted the School in successfully hosting the 12th and 14th SUIBE-KAS Annual Forum (jointly with Konrad Adenauer Foundation), and the Shanghai Postgraduate Academic Forum for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. The Department has given full play to our role as a think tank and professional advantages to offer suggestions and advice on promoting high-quality development of Shanghai and guiding teachers on improving teaching quality through academic research.
Faculty
The Department has a faculty team of 10 teachers with well-structured academic backgrounds, age mix, and professional titles; 40% have senior professional titles, 60% have doctoral degrees, and 100% have overseas research and study experience. The Department forms course teams based on core courses and regularly organizes teaching and research activities. In the past three years, the teachers’ original teaching cases have been selected as excellent teaching cases by Shanghai Steering Committee for Professional Degrees in Finance and the National Steering Committee for Professional Degrees in Finance. The Department has won the first prize of the SUIBE Teaching Achievement Award for its innovative practice and exploration of the “international, professional, and forward-looking” cultivation mode. The Department recruited renowned experts and professors with rich practical experience and excellent teaching skills as part-time teachers to strengthen the interaction with the practical field. Meanwhile, we encourage and support our teachers to participate in on-the-job practice to improve their practical capacity for financial product innovation.
