Overview of the Department of Financial Management

The Department, formerly known as the Chrematistics Program established in 1994, began to enroll undergraduates in 1995. In 1998, it was restructured as the Department of Financial Management and set up the Financial Management Program (Chinese-foreign cooperation) and was approved for the master’s degree program in Financial Management in 2012. The Chinese-Canadian Cooperative Education Program won the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Teaching Achievement Award, the Outstanding International Education Award from the Federal Government of Canada, and the Silver Award of the International Cooperation Program of the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics. The Department is committed to cultivating financial management professionals with a global vision and innovative spirit, a strong sense of social responsibility, solid academic background, familiar with international business operation practices, adaptable to an intelligent financial environment, and capable of analyzing finance and capital markets.


Academic Research

The Department always attaches great importance to academic research, devoted to developing a virtuous circle between scientific study and course construction and promoting teachers to integrate the latest and representative development of the discipline and industry into course teaching. Additionally, we have sound professional academic research institutions and scientific research teams, with specialized research institutions such as the Corporate Finance Institute and multiple academic research teams composed of experienced teachers. In recent years, our faculty members have succeeded in applying for or concluding 9 national and provincial level projects, including projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, the Humanities and Social Sciences Fund of the Ministry of Education, and the Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Foundation. Over 50 academic papers were published in SSCI and CSSCI listed journals, and many papers have been published in top journals such as Review of Accounting Studies, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Financial Research, Accounting Research, Nankai Business Review, China Industrial Economics, Journal of Finance and Economics.


Faculty

We have 15 full-time faculty members, including 6 full professors and 6 associate professors. Among them, 14 have obtained their doctoral degrees, and 11 have the experience of studying or researching in prestigious overseas universities, such as the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Southern California, Texas A&M University, and the University of Washington. We, devoted to building core curriculum teaching teams on the basis of courses, have formed four teaching teams of Financial Management, Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (English), Financial Statement Analysis, and Cases Study of Financial Management. Our teaching team of courses on financial management was recognized as an excellent teaching team in Shanghai. Meanwhile, the team was approved for a National Quality Course, 2 National Quality Resource Sharing Courses, and 9 Shanghai Demonstration Courses and Quality Courses. Our teachers have also won many prizes, including the SUIBE Bilingual Teaching Quality Award, the third prize in the Teaching Competition for Young Faculty Members in Shanghai Universities, and the third prize in the category of Economics, Management, and Law in the “Shanghai University Young Teachers’ Training Subsidy Scheme”.
