The Department of Insurance

The Department of Insurance has been recruiting undergraduates since 2004, with an annual enrollment of about 30 students. It began recruiting academic master’s students in 2016 and professional master’s students in 2023, with yearly enrollment of around 25 postgraduates. The Department cultivates highly qualified and skilled talent with solid theoretical knowledge, outstanding practical ability, international perspective, and social responsibility, mainly for insurance enterprises, regulatory bodies, and related financial enterprises such as commercial banks, securities, funds, and asset management companies.


Academic Research

Our main research fields include behavioral insurance economics, social security and social insurance, enterprise risk management, insurance actuary, insurance financial analysis, the Chinese insurance market, and so forth. Our faculty members have presided over and completed many projects such as those from the General Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Projects of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning Projects, Projects from the Special Fund for Outstanding Young University Teachers, Key Research Projects of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Key Research Projects of Shanghai Insurance Regulatory Bureau, etc. In addition, they have published more than 60 papers in journals such as Insurance Studies, Shanghai Finance, System Engineering Theory and Practice, China Industrial Economics, Journal of Management Sciences in China, Shanghai Insurance, etc. Our department has formed distinctive research characteristics in insurance economics and insurance financial analysis, exerting a considerable influence on insurance academia and the insurance industry.



Faculty

The Department boasts an excellent faculty team of 7 teachers, including 2 professors, 1 associate professor, and 4 lecturers, 5 of whom have doctoral degrees. For more than a decade, the teachers of the Department, having adhered to the strategy of “problem orientation and taking root in the industry”, and insisted on combining theory and practice, have continued to focus on and thoroughly analyze the significant events and development trends of the insurance industry. Additionally, they have constantly updated the teaching content to keep synchronized with the industry development and formed their theoretical system by abstracting their industry observations and research results. Our faculty members published Behavioral Insurance Economics, the first monograph of its kind in China, IFRS17 Intrinsic Principles and New Financial Reporting, the first monograph of its kind in China, and Insurance Company Business Analysis: Based on Financial Reporting, the first textbook of its kind in China. In this way, the Department has formed its research and teaching characteristics in insurance economics and financial analysis, producing a broad and profound effect on insurance academia and the insurance industry.
