SUIBE students won Awards in 2019 MCM Contest

SUIBE students again achieved outstanding performance in 2019 MCM Contest. 3 teams have been awarded the Meritorious Winner and 13 teams the Honorable Mention.

Sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application (COMAP), MCM is an international contest for high school students and college undergraduates. The content of the contest covers economics, management, environment, resources, ecology, medicine, security, future technology etc. It aims to“power solutions to the twenty-first century through mathematical applications and modeling recourses”. COMAP’s MCM has become the most influential mathematical modeling competition in the world. The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisers all over the world. The problems in this year include “Time to leave Louvre”, “Game of Ecology”, “The Opioid Crisis” etc., which were provided to develop students’  interpersonal skills  through teamwork and to encourage students to clarify, analyze and propose solutions to open-ended questions. 25370 teams participated in 2019 MCM contest, marking the largest participation since is inception in 1984. The number of the teams has increased by 4732 but the number of awards has decreased to 23% this year, among which Meritorious Winner takes 7.09% (1799 teams),  Honorable Mention15.35% (3895 teams). It means more challenges for students to win the awards.

SUIBE students have participated in the MCM Contest for five consecutive years and the scale of participation and the proportion of awards winners have increased year by year. The success owes much to SUIBE’s implementation of the guidelines of the National Education Conference and the policy of “Three-aspect” Education which focus on the cultivation of students’ creativity and innovation. SUIBE has been dedicating to the construction of first-class undergraduate education and extracurricular activities which can effectively help students to achieve the competence of self-development. Thanks to Xu Yonglin, the vice president of SUIBE, as well as the heads of the Academic Affairs Office and the Student Affairs Department who visited the participants and encouraged them to achieve better performance during the competition. Thanks to the support of the Propaganda Department, Department of Student Management and Services, the Academic Affairs Office and the Student Affairs Department, the Logistic Department and the Security Department of the Party Committee, the contest progressed very smoothly. The success was also attributed to the faculty advisors from Business Information School: Liu Yonghui, Yuan Mingsheng, Wang Lijuan, Zhu Jianming, Zhang Wei, Liu Hai, Li Rui, Yan Xin, Liu Shu, Wei Yujuan and Li Lei. The teachers offered precious directions and made great contribution to the planning and organization of the event.
