The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) was held at 6 a.m. on January 25, 2019. 285 SUIBE students formed 95 teams and participated in the competition. Xu Yonglin, the vice president of SUIBE, together with the heads of the Academic Affairs Office and the Student Affairs Department, came to SB201 and visited the participants.
Xu fully affirmed the devotion and hard work of the students during their winter vacation. He pointed out that it was an excellent opportunity to cultivate the innovative, comprehensive and applied abilities of the students through MCM and to develop students’ interpersonal skillsthrough team work. He believed that the students could benefit a lot from it no matter in their further studies or in their career development. He encouraged the students to overcome difficulties and make great achievements again this year. Liu Yonghui, dean of Business Information School, hoped that everyone could alternate work with rest and allocate time reasonably to maintain ample energy and good state during the four days of competition.
Sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application (COMAP), MCM is an international contest for high school students and college undergraduates. The content of the competition covers economics, management, environment, resources, ecology, medicine, security, future technology etc. It challenges teams of students to clarify, analyzeand propose solutions to open-ended questions. COMAP’s MCM has become the most influential mathematical modeling competition in the world. The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisers all over the world. More and more SUIBE students have participated in the MCM/ICM contest since 2015 and 7 teams have been awarded the Meritorious Winner and 54 teams the Honorable Mention.
The faculty advisors were Liu Yonghui, Yuan Mingsheng, Wang Lijuan, Zhu Jianming, Zhang Wei, Liu Hai, Li Rui, Yan Xin, Liu Shu, Wei Yujuan and Li Lei, teachers from Business Information School.
