SUIBE Hosts International Conference on “Law and Society: The Jews of Shanghai”

Jointly sponsored by SUIBE, Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg LawCenter, Center for Jewish Studies Shanghai (CJSS), ShanghaiAssociation of International Friends, and Shanghai Jewish RefugeesMuseum, an international conference on “Law and Society: The Jewsof Shanghai” was held on 1-3 June to commemorate the 70thanniversary of the survival of Jewish refugees in Shanghai duringWorld War II. The conference was held in Shanghai Jewish RefugeesMuseum and SUIBE Gubei campus respectively.

 

At the launch of the symposium in Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museumon 1 June, Sun Haimin, SUIBE President, Patricia E. Salkin, Dean ofTouro Law Center, Nadav Zysblat, Deputy Consul-General of theConsulate General of Israel in Shanghai, and Brian Gibel, PublicAffairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General Shanghai, delivered openingspeeches.

Nie Qin, SUIBE Vice President, Patricia Salkin, Dean of Touro LawCenter, Pan Guang, Dean of Center of Jewish Studies Shanghai, andChen Jian, Curator of Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum attended theopening ceremony on 2 June. The conference brought together lawprofessors, historians, and Holocaust survivors who lived throughthe period in Shanghai. SUIBE Professor Chen Hui and CJSS DirectorPan Guang spoke about the history of Shanghai and the Jewishcommunity in the city. Maisie J. Meyer, Dan Ben-Canaan, and LilianeWillens discussed the topic of Sephardi Jews, Russian Jews, andFrom Harbin to Shanghai.

 

Two sessions were held on the theme of Jewish Refugees in Shanghaiand the Jewish Community in Shanghai on 3 June.

 

Patricia Salkin and Ni Shoubing, Dean of SUIBE Law School, madeconcluding remarks at the closing ceremony, expressing the wish tofurther promote cooperation in matters of mutual historic andcultural interest between Chinese and Jewish people.
