Virtual Workshop with the Duke University School of Law

On the morning of April 30, the School of Law at SUIBE and theSchool of Law at Duke University co-hosted a virtual workshop withthe theme of “Liability for Financial Failure: CorporateRisk-Taking & the Decline of Personal Blame”. Faculty andstudents from the two sides communicated directly through advancedtele-conference technologies and facilities.

 

The workshop is composed of a keynote speech and a Q&A session.The keynote speaker, Prof. Steven L. Schwarcz is a prestigiousscholar in Financial Law in the U.S. He elaborated on threequestions regarding the civil liability of managers for thefailures of financial institutions, i.e. whether individualmanagers shall be held accountable for corporate failures; how toeffectively lower excessive risk-taking of managers; and how tostrike a balance between the duty of individual managers and theprotection of public interests. Teachers, graduates andundergraduates from SUIBE Law School exchanged with Prof. Schwarczon a number of issues, such as the relationship between economy andmanagers’ responsibility, cost-profit balance, corporateresponsibility and managers’ responsibility, and public governance.The workshop concluded with comments and summary of Prof. NiShoubin, Dean of SUIBE Law School.

 

The explicit and detailed explanation of Prof. Schwarcz was verywell received by the SUIBE teachers and students. They have come toknow more about the legal responsibilities of the managers offinancial institutions in the U.S. Prof. Schwarcz was veryimpressed by their thorough preparation and active participation inthe Q&A session.

It is the first virtual international workshop SUBIE Law School hasheld. The School will conduct more internet-based academicexchanges with its overseas counterparts.
