Former World Bank Official Visits SUIBE Think Tank

Prof. L Alan Winters, a council member of SUIBE’s think tank and aprofessor at the University of Sussex visited the Joint ResearchCentre for International Economic and Trade Governance and China’sReform and Opening-up, a think tank based at SUIBE. At the seminar,Prof. Winters discussed with the research fellows from the thinktank on two major trade negotiations – TPP and TTIP. He introducedthe background and development of TTP and gave a detailed analysisof the reasons why TPP negotiations had drawn special attention inrecent years. He also talked about the main areas covered in TTIPand trade benefits these two trade arrangements might bring tocountries of the world. He concluded with some suggestions as tohow China could cope with the two arrangements. After the seminar,Prof. Winters and the research fellows exchanged ideas on issuesconcerning the Shanghai FTZ, competition policies, and thefeasibility of expanding regional arrangements to multi-lateralarrangements.

 

A world renowned economist, Prof. L Alan Winters was ChiefEconomist at the Department for International Development andDirector of the Development Research Group of the World Bank. Hehas acted as a consultant for the Organization for EconomicCooperation and Development, the Commonwealth Secretariat, theEuropean Commission and Parliament, and the Inter-AmericanDevelopment Bank..He has served on several editorial boardsincluding the World Bank Economic Review and The World TradeReview.
