The 13th SUIBE–KAS WTO-Conference 2013 kicked off on 23rd Novemberin Shanghai. With the theme of Trade and Climate Change, Theconference was co-organized by the Shanghai University ofInternational Business and Economics (SUIBE) andKonrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Shanghai. The conference gatheredover 150 participants including policy makers, experts and scholarsand teachers and students from SUIBE.
The conference started with welcoming remarks by Prof. Sun Haiming,President of SUIBE and Dr. Peter Hefele, Director, KAS Shanghairespectively. After that, Dr. Huo Jianguo, Director, ChineseAcademy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC),Ministry of Commerce gave a keynote speech on Trade and ClimateChange: An Inevitable Collision?, which was followed by threesections on specific sub-themes, namely trade and climate change -country studies, coping with climate change - unfolding resourcesand creating incentives for business, and mitigating climate changePolicy within the WTO framework - recommendation for internationaltrade policy. Prof. Zhang Lei, Dean of the School of WTO Researchand Education, SUIBE chaired the section on country studies. Prof.Zhao Hongjun, Deputy Dean of the School of Business, SUIBE gave apresentation on Climate Change and International Trade, Theory andChinese Practice Discussion. Experts and scholars from otherChinese universities such as Nanjing University, Xiamen University,Tongji University, etc. also presented their research findings andideas. After the three sections, Nina Trentmann, BusinessCorrespondent, DIE WELT chaired the round table discussion attended
by Dr. Qin Tianbao, Deputy Dean of the School of Law, WuhanUniversity, Nitya Nanda, Fellow, Centre for Global Agreements,Legislation and Trade, Resources, Regulation and Global Security Division, TERI, India, TobiasLinnemann, Parliamentary Adviser Industry, Research and EnergyCommittee (ITRE), EPP Group in the European Parliament, and Dr.Niven Winchester, Joint Program on the Science and Policy of GlobalChange, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the end of theconference Prof. Ye Xingguo, Vice President of SUIBE gave someconcluding remarks.
Since the beginning of SUIBE-KAS cooperation in 2001, the annualSUIBE-KAS WTO conference has developed into an important platformwith its own characteristics for academic and scholarlydiscussions.
