On August 20, the “Connecting East Africa, Integrating Global Finance: 2026 Kenya Forum on the Global Use of RMB and Cross-Border Financial Cooperation” was held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. The forum brought together participants for discussions on the international use of the RMB, cross-border payment and clearing, and China-Kenya financial cooperation. Professor Huang Meibo, Dean of the SUIBE Institute of International Development Cooperation , delivered a keynote speech titled “Deglobalization, Supply Chain Restructuring, and Cross-Border RMB Settlement: Underlying Logic and Implementation Pathways”.

Professor Huang Meibo noted in her speech that further advancing the international use of the RMB requires stronger linkages between the cross-border cash flows generated by industrial chains, financial products offered by commercial banks, and payment and clearing infrastructure. She called for expanding the functions of the RMB beyond payment and settlement to include pricing, financing, hedging, and asset allocation.

During the forum, Professor Huang Meibo was interviewed by CGTN English. She noted that the expansion of cross-border RMB use should be driven by genuine demand for trade and investment and based on the independent choices of market participants. She emphasized that continuously improving the convenience and efficiency of settlement and strengthening financial service capabilities would provide enterprises with more options for conducting cross-border business.
