China Association for International Education, a branch organization of China Association of Higher Education, and Donghua University co-hosted the Second CUORI Cup Nationwide International Student Fashion Design Competition in Donghua University, Shanghai, on April 26. The contest attracted international students from some 20 universities in China, including Donghua University, Tianjin University, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, Hebei University, Harbin Engineering University, China Academy of Art, Wuhan Textile University, Chongqing University, Southwest University, Shandong University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Jiangnan University, Nanjing University of the Arts, and SUIBE. After the assessment of the expert panel, 35 fashion designs submitted by international students from 18 universities and 21 countries entered the final round of the competition.
Ms. Ngô Hoàng Giang, a SUIBE international student from Viet Nam, won the bronze medal in the national competition. Named “the Grace of the Chinese Phoenix”, her fashion design integrates both the Chinese and the Western cultural elements. The Chinese Phoenix (feng huang) is a mythological bird in the Chinese culture, symbolizing good fortune and harmony. Her elegant and exquisite design is based on a Western long dress in black and gold embellished with traditional Chinese embroidered phoenixes.
For thousands of years, the ancient Chinese civilization has made its impact felt along the Silk Road, while the Chinese people, at the same time, have also come into contact with other civilizations. The blend of different cultures has produced unique aesthetic features.
Through the fashion design, the event provides a good platform for different cultures to meet and learn from each other, allowing international students in China to fuse the Chinese culture with their own and to deepen their understanding of the Chinese culture.
