Launch of the World Trade Report 2016 by WTO Chair

The WTO Chair launched the World Trade Report 2016 in Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, China on October 13th. The theme for the 2016 report is Levelling the trading field for SMEs. Prof. Zhang Lei, WTO Chair Holder, Dean of the School of WTO Research and Education, SUIBE, and Director of Shanghai Center for Global Trade and Economic Governance chaired the launching ceremony.

In his address, HE. Mr. YI Xiaozhun, Deputy Director-General of the WTO emphasized the important role of SMEs in global trade and economic development and highlighted the fact that SMEs provide most of the job opportunities in most economies especially developing economies. He expects to see the integration of SMEs into global value chain to provide strong incentives for the development of world economy.

Mr. Hubert Escaith, Chief Statistician of the WTO, presented the main content and viewpoints in the Report and explained the participation of SMEs in international trade, how the international trade landscape is changing for SMEs, and what the multilateral trading system does and can do to encourage more widespread and inclusive SME participation in global markets.

Ms. Mia Mikic, Director of the UN ESCAP and Mr. Cheng Shuaihua, Managing Director of the ICTST made comments and further explained the difficulties involved in SMEs participation in global value chain, the impact of regional and multilateral trade agreements, and how the multilateral trading system can encourage SMEs to play more important roles in the international trade market.
Ying Pinguang, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Center for Global Trade and Economic Governance, Researcher and Associate Professor Xu Xin, Researcher and Associate Wang Qian, Researcher Xia wei, and Mr. Zhao Jianyun from the Centre attended the launching ceremony.
