SUIBE-cosponsored Confucius Institute Zagreb Holds First Dragon Boat Race

Under the auspices of Confucius Institute Zagreb, which is jointly sponsored by SUIBE and the University of Zagreb, the First Dragon Boat Race was held on Jarun Lake, southwestern Zagreb, Croatia, on 11 June.

The Dragon Boat Race, also known as Duanwu Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, honors Qu Yuan, a revered fourth-century poet and statesman of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty. The Dragon Boat Race, which is held in Croatia for the first time this year, drew over 200 participants from local students, teachers, government officials, and company employees. The water sports event was covered by such media as China’s Xinhua News Agency and Croatia’s National TV. The local people showed a tremendous interest in this traditional Chinese festival.

Altogether 10 teams raced against each other in group tournaments. All the staff of CI Zagreb, including the two co-directors, participated in the race in two teams. At the end of the race, the two co-directors of CI Zagreb presented prizes to the winning teams and posed for a group photo.
