SUIBE Hosts Sino-Japan Economic Forum in Commemoration of the 45th Anniversary of the Normalization of Bilateral Relations

The China-Japan Economic Forum in Commemoration of the 45th Anniversary of the Normalization of Diplomatic Relations was recently held in SUIBE. Nearly 50 officials, experts and scholars from Chinese and overseas government agencies and research institutes attended the event, including Zhou Hanmin, permanent member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and vice chair of the CPPCC Shanghai Committee; Zhou Xiaosong, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and president of the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; Taichi Sakaiya, former minister of the Japanese Cabinet-level Economic Planning Agency; Katayama Kazuyuki, Consul General of the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai; as well as representatives from the Japanese Cabinet, the Japanese Embassy in China, the Japan Research Institute (JRI), the Bank of Japan Representative Office in Beijing, the Shanghai Representative Office of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Mitsui Sumitomo Marine Management (China) Inc., the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), the Shanghai Association for Japanese Studies (SAJS), the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Center (SCC/WTO), and SUIBE Center for Japanese Economic Studies.

Zhou Hanmin, permanent member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and vice chair of the CPPCC Shanghai Committee, and Taichi Sakaiya, former minister of the Japanese Cabinet-level Economic Planning Agency, delivered key-note speeches on Shanghai World Expo and Sino-Japan Cooperation.

The forum centered on the discussion of four major issues, namely, Shanghai World Expo and Sino-Japanese Cooperation, Economic Policy and Sino-Japanese Economic and Trade Relations, Economic Integration and Sino-Japanese Economic Cooperation, Local Economy and Sino-Japanese Economic Cooperation. At the meeting, Lu Kejian, former envoy at the Chinese Embassy in Japan; Hiroyuki Inoue,Counselor at the Japanese Cabinet Secretariat; Zhang Jifeng, deputy director of the Institute for Japanese Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Yuli Okina, vice chair of the Japan Research Institute (JRI); Quan Heng, director of the Institute of World Economy at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; Hirobumi Iida, Minister for Commercial Affairs at the Embassy of Japan in China; Song Zhiyong, director of the Institute of Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) under China’s Ministry of Commerce; Kenji Wada, Chief Representative of the Bank of Japan in Beijing; Domyo Oguri, Chief Representative of the Shanghai Office of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO); Yao Weiqun, former vice president of the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Center (SCC/WTO); Chen Zilei, director of SUIBE Center for Japanese Economic Studies, gave a detailed and comprehensive discussion on Sino-Japanese economic cooperation over the past 45 years since the two countries normalized their diplomatic ties, analyzed the problems and challenges facing the current Sino-Japanese economic relations, and explored ways and strategies to promote bilateral economic cooperation. At the closing ceremony, Lu Kejian, former envoy at the Chinese Embassy in Japan, provided a summary of the discussion, and Chen Zilei, director of SUIBE Center for Japanese Economic Studies, gave some concluding remarks.
